the music: rhapsody

Back to: the violin maker

In creating this project, I wanted to explore photographically the colours and textures of the workshop itself and the instruments - their shapes, their curves, their exquisite, sculptured proportions. But these are ultimately instruments to be played and to be used to create music. And though the fundamental instruments are unchanged over half a millennium, the musical output across those centuries has flourished and changed immeasurably and the violin has featured throughout: from 17th century Baroque, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Bach Partitas and Sonatas, through the Classical period and the great string quartets and concertos of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, onwards to the Romantic era of Brahms and Mendelssohn and the virtuosity of Paganini; and into the 20th and 21st centuries with Vaughan Williams, Debussy, Ravel, Jazz, Bluegrass, Indie, Rock and K-pop.

In the introduction to this project, there are a series of QR codes which link to excerpts of music played by professional musician, Dominic Moore, to capture some of the richness and variety of the violin's musical repertoire.
